Station Wagon Vacation — Another Place, Another Time
New work by Sue Wille, aka Suzie Millions
The squeak of the styrofoam cooler, the groan of the stack of Samsonite luggage, the rustle of a saltine sleeve nestled on top of a paper grocery bag — the motion sickness preparedness kit was a must with the rear-facing station wagon bench seat ("the way back"). Growing up in the 1960s, not much topped the adventure of our annual summer vacation.
The pieces in this series feature found photographs, ephemera, and period-appropriate detritus that evoke the happy trails, the tourist stops, the ma-and-pa motels, and the we're-not-in-the-midwest anymore cultural explorations encountered along the highlighted route of the AAA Triptik. Many of the pieces are on cedar planks, a visual and aromatic nod to the roadside shops filled with cedar souvenirs.
These assemblages intend not to tell precise stories, but to provide a bread-crumb trail to times and places forever lost. They are portals to those times and places, to revisit, or to explore for the first time. They invite interpretation.
Also on display, Pigoupages, found wood cutouts embellished with thematic vintage imagery and objects.
